The forest was quiet as the sun began to set, dappling the ground with an orange glow between the trees. In a small clearing by a flowing stream, a unicorn stood alone, gazing listlessly into the water. His white coat shone in the fading light, but his eyes looked weary and sad.
Lowering his head to the stream, he drank slowly, enjoying the cool freshness on his parched throat. As he drank, a soft snap of a twig made his ears perk up abruptly. Snorting in alarm, he spun around, backing toward the water and pawing at the soil nervously.
Peering into the shadows, he saw another figure emerging - another unicorn, with a soft white coat. Her violet eyes met his amber ones calmly, without fear or alarm. The two stared at one another for a long moment, as the light faded further around them.
Then slowly, hesitantly, she walked forward until only a few paces separated them. Her horn and hooves gleamed in matched tones. The lonely unicorn's tense stance relaxed ever so slightly, curiosity replacing caution in his gaze. Without words, they understood one another's solitude, their mutual yearning for company in the large, quiet forest.
As night fell, the two unicorns ran side by side through the trees, manes and tails streaming behind them.
They galloped down to the sandy shore and gazed out at the calm ocean together, feeling their loneliness recede.
As the stars began to emerge above the sea, they pranced joyfully back to the forest where they had met.
They lay down together under the shelter of the boughs feeling the night air and each recognising the comfort in the presence of a new friend. Slowly they drifted into peaceful sleep under the night sky.
